Why I Blog

Helping a friend set up her blog and discussing her purpose in blogging had me thinking about why I blog. Reading the article on pages 8-20 of Setapart Girl kept the wheels spinning...so why do I blog?

Let me start off by saying why I read other people's blogs. I read them to be encouraged, to be inspired, to grow in my faith and photography. So then I write my own blog to encourage others, inspire others, and to help others grow in their faith and photography.
My faith is my relationship with my personal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christ is my life-Colossians 3:4. My blog is about my life--a life worthy of the Lord.

...you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. -Colossians 1:10-14

So this is why I blog.

Honestly, this is not how I started out blogging. But I am not the same as I was nearly two years ago--I've changed. I look back at some of my first posts and want to smack myself...but by mistakes we live and learn. I've made mistakes--many of them. I've lived--nearly two more years. I've learned--why I blog now.

an accent seasoned with salt

I recently had the chance to meet someone from Brazil. Her native language is Portuguese, of course, but she spoke English very well. Naturally, she had a very distinct accent. When told, "Say that again, I love your accent!" she responded with, "Oh? I hate it." That thought struck me as strange.

Accent / ac·cent /ˈækˌsɛnt, / noun
1: a way of pronouncing words that occurs among the people in a particular region or country

Everyone has an accent. When we speak, our accent tells people where we're from.

When I speak, I'm sure that people can tell where in the country I'm from. Those from the south usually have a southern drawl. Those from New Jersey have a distinct New Jersey accent. Those from large cities even have an accent. Those from other countries have different accents when they speak English--even those who speak English as their native language such as the British and Australian. I'm sure I have an American accent when I speak German. It would be strange if I didn't and had, say, a French accent!

Our accent can define us. What do I want my accent to say about me? That I live in the US, that I'm smart, that I'm...what?
What is my lifelong goal? to live a life worthy of the Lord - Colossians 1:10
My accent needs to reflect that.
My accent is to be evidence of the love of God in me. My accent is to be seasoned with salt.

My accent tells people I'm from the body of Christ.

Matthew 5
1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying: [...] 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

Time

(I've been reading many posts reflecting on this past year. Reflecting on the past is fine, as long as you don't get caught up in it. Remembering the past is important. If I want to remember the past I can simply read past posts. Right now, I want to look to the future--and this next year, 2012.)

Recently I've been thinking about time. We, as humans, are bound by it. We measure life by it. Sometimes it seems to fly by in an instant and othertimes drag on for forever. Along with time, I've been thinking about how I spend my time and what really matters.

This past week, I noticed a little plaque in the house we stayed at. It wasn't fancy or especially eye catchy. It wasn't in a prominent place either. It sat tucked away in a corner on a dresser. The words it held were what caught my attention.

Wondering who the quote was by, I googled the short phrase. Only to discover that it was just a small part of a bigger work by a someone named C.T. Studd. A very convicting work by this someone indeed.

“Two little lines I heard one day,
Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart,
And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet,
And stand before His Judgement seat;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice,
Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave,
And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years,
Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its clays I must fulfill,
living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore,
When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way,
Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep,
In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife,
Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn,
And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone,
Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, “twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Now let me say,”Thy will be done”;
And when at last I’ll hear the call,
I know I’ll say “twas worth it all”;
Only one life,’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last. ”

Only one life, ’twill soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.
And when I am dying, how happy I’ll be,
If the lamp of my life has been burned out for Thee.”

- C.T. Studd

So true. Time is fleeting, this life is short, and the only thing that matters in it is what is done for Christ--because that is what will last for an eternity. So my goal this new year is to do what really matters, God's will for my life.

"Rejoice always                     .
           pray without ceasing
 in everything give thanks
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Notice I said goal not resolution. A resolution is simply resolving or determining to do something. A goal is  'the end toward which effort is directed.' I don't simply want to resolve in and of myself to do something, I want a goal. I want a goal that I know I can't achieve in and of myself to do. I want a goal that only God can do through me.

I want 2012 to be a year of God working in me and through my life.

2012.
a year of always rejoicing.
of never ceasing to pray.
of giving thanks in everything.
because this is God's will in Christ Jesus for me.

welcome, 2012!

a surplus of grace - a thankful thursday -

The other day I came across a post that really, really caught my attention. Why? Because it spoke straight to my heart--it was what I've been thinking and living, but in words.

I have thanked Him. For many things.
I haven't thanked Him. For many things.
He can change me.
I ache to be thankful.

Yes, yes, YES! my heart cried out as I read:

The surplus.
by noelle at seeing beauty.

What do you want?, He asked.

To be whole.
To be free from bitterness.
To see the good, true, and beautiful.
To live fully.
Ultimately, to give thanks.

Have you?

I have thanked Him. For many things.
For His grace, His kindness, His goodness and mercy.
I have given thanks for my few accomplishments.
I have thanked Him that I am so fortunate
And so blessed
And so full
And so able to get it all done.
(Silently, bitterly
Grieving the emptiness
Counting failure after failure.)

False gratitude.
Easy gratitude.
Like thanking my Savior for helping
(the same way I’d thank a small child for “helping”)
when in reality, I owe Him my life.

I haven’t thanked Him. For many things.
Consciously, unconsciously, I don’t really know.
But I know how bitter I remain
How it gnaws and aches in the silence
How I don’t understand
How I cling to “This shouldn’t have happened,” and “I never deserved this,”
How I wonder what I did wrong
And still think I could have prevented it.

I’ve conceded His goodness
Thanked Him for redemption,
for evidence of grace,
for sparing me from a harsher fate.
Thank Him in all? I’ve tried.
But thank Him for all?

How? Is that even required?

Can I force my soul to do the seemingly impossible,
To be thankful for that which reason does not permit us to appreciate as “good”
To be thankful not for the byproduct or some secondary effect, but for the very circumstance
To acknowledge as worthy that which pain deems unworthy of thanks
To call the deficit itself a surplus of grace?

No.

But He can change me.

I ache to be thankful.
Not to tally my losses, because our God is not a glorified thief
Not to even the score, because our God is not a scorekeeper
Not to make it easy, because our God is an artist of broken pieces
But to live with unreasonable gratitude
And in so doing, to live fully
Beyond the threshold of joy.

So I thank Him. For many things.
For a surplus of grace.

211: Thank You, Lord, for my Daddy's job six hours away. Thank you for the time with him on weekends made special by that circumstance.
212: Thank You for the cold. The cold that makes me appreciate a warm house all the more.
213: Thank You, Father, for human sinful nature causing strife and arguing resulting in separation. Thank you for the growth in my life that those circumstances caused.
214: Thank You that I sin. Thank you that I'm not perfect. Thank you that my failures cause me to fall on Your sinless, perfect, unfailing grace.
215: Thank You for a surplus of grace.

The Only Thing
--ronnie freeman--

I heard someone say
The other day
They'd seen in me
True love displayed
Blessed by something
I had done for them
No sooner
Did they speak those words
I found myself
Somehow disturbed
Uneasy as I took their compliment
Because I know
The heart inside this man
And I know the truth of who I am

The only thing that's good in me
I know me well enough to know
No matter what this life may show
The only thing that's good in me
Is Jesus
Jesus
It's You
It's You
It's You
Only You

14NOV2011 a miscellany monday

{1}
I had my first 'collision' with another vehicle yesterday--what an experience! Driving my dad's huge, stick shift, ginormous, diesel, monstrous, black pickup truck home from Church. Scary. This was my second time driving it. Right after I turned onto the road heading home a little vehicle turned afterwards and proceeded to drive right on my tail. Lets just say he was not happy that I was going the speed limit. I was busy concentrating on shifting gears while staying on my side of the road going around tight mountainous turns. I approach an intersection at the top of the hill. Downshift then brake. I'm still not quite sure what I did, but the truck rolled backwards a few feet. Remember how the guy was on my tail? Yeah, I tapped his bumper. A honking horn, words in anger, and a shaking fist was the response I got from the irate driver. Nearly every other word he said to my dad and me was unwholesome. Yay. My dad got out of the truck and went to examine the damage. He said that you could barely tell that there had been a collision. The other man said that his $500 bumper was ruined. Pictures were taken and words were exchanged. After probably fifteen minutes we left. Supposedly he is going to file a court claim. Driving a manual transmission diesel truck is not my idea of fun, but it could have been worse--much worse. =P Who knows? Maybe my driving the speed limit (and keeping him at it too) saved him a turn too quickly taken and a totaled car as opposed to a mark on his bumper? I'm just glad that it is over and grateful to my Daddy who handled the situation so well. =)

{2}
I'm finished with my history project on propaganda in the U.S. during WWI. I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I'll see if my teacher is as happy as I am...sometime...whenever he gets around to grading it...

{3}
Please be praying for my grandma--she was in the hospital this past week for her heart. It had an irregular beat and was too fast. They have her on new medication now.

I wrote my heart out in a guest post over at Living on Literary Lane today [here].  Head on over to read! (while you're there leave Elizabeth a sweet little note to read when she comes back from her blogging break)

My Constant despite the changes

Right now it feels like everything in my life is changing. Nothing is how it once was.

My daddy has a new job. He has to commute 6-8 hours away one way. He is only home on weekends.

My family switched churches. Everything is so different. The people, the services, what I do, the whole atmosphere.

My dance studio closed. The flooding from Lee was so bad. The teachers still want to teach, but don't have a building. We will have to use another studio's rooms. Classes still haven't started. It is going to take twice as long to get there.

My life changed from camp to coming home. Camp is its own little world up there on the mountain top. Coming back home has been such a change.

It seems like everything in my life has changed this past year--my life at home, at church, at dance, everywhere.

Yet I have a constant.

Your commands ... are my constant guide.
-Psalm 119:98

Right now it may feel like everything is changing and there is nothing to cling to. Wrong. I can cling to HIM.

Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey His
commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.
-Deuteronomy 13:4

He is always faithful and constant.

Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He
is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand
generations and constantly loves those who love him and obey His commands.
-Deuteronomy 7:9

I will trust Him.

But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
-Psalm 13:5

I think back to this guest post by Nana.

Lamentations 3:22-23

He's Always Been Faithful
Sara Groves

It is not about me--it is about Him. --something I learned at camp this summer.
He is using this time to grow me, it may not be comfortable(in fact it is not at all!), but He has my best in mind.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
-Romans 8:28

I will trust Him.

Strength in Weakness

"So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."                                —2 Corinthians 12:7-10

I am weak. I have many faults. I worry. I stumble. I doubt. I fear.
Is it just me, or is it heartening to know that even Paul was weak? That even though he prayed and pleaded to God, that he was given the 'No.' answer? The fact that others have faults may be heartening to my humanness, but it is so comforting and reassuring to me know that:

2Cor_12-9

If I didn't worry, then I wouldn't rely on His faithfulness. Because He cares for me.
If I didn't stumble, then I wouldn't rely on His grace and forgiveness. Because He forgives me.
If I didn't doubt, then I wouldn't rely on His Sovereignty. Because He even died for me.
If I didn't fear, then I wouldn't rely on His protection. Because He loves me.
If I can't __(anything)__, then I wouldn't rely on Him. Because:

Perspective

Perspective [per-spek-tiv] -noun
1. a visible scene, especially one extending to a distance
2. the state of one's ideas, the facts known to one, etc.
3. the faculty of seeing all the relevant data in a meaningful relationship
4. a mental view or prospect

So often my perspective in life is small and only focused on what is right in front of me.

IMG_9300

As a detail oriented person I often fail to look up and see the big picture. The big picture is so much more beautiful and meaningful.

IMG_9299

Being a detailed person isn't all bad. It is all the small details that make up the big picture. But I need to learn to step back and look at the bigger picture outside of my own little world.

My Own Little World
by Matthew West

In my own little world it hardly ever rains
I've never gone hungry and always felt safe
I got some money in my pocket shoes on my feet
In my own little world
Population me

I try to stay awake through the Sunday morning church
I throw a twenty in the plate but I never give 'til it hurts
and I turn off the news when I don't like what I see
it's easy to do when it's
population me

What if there's a bigger picture
what if I'm missing out
What if there's a greater purpose
I could be living right now
outside my own little world

Stopped at the red light, looked out my window
Outside the car, saw a sign, said "Help this homeless widow"
Just above this sign was the face of a human
I thought to myself, "God, what have I been doing?"

So I rolled down my window and I looked her in the eye
Oh how many times have I just passed her by
I gave her some money then I drove on through
in my own little world there's
Population two

What if there's a bigger picture
what if I'm missing out
What if there's a greater purpose
I could be living right now
outside my own little world

Start breaking my heart for what breaks Yours
give me open hands and open doors
put Your light in my eyes and let me see
that my own little world is not about me

Joy

Joy.  Something we all want/desire/long for in our lives. What is joy, anyways?
This is Merriam-Webster's definition:

Joy noun \ˈjȯi\
1: a : the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires : delight
b : the expression or exhibition of such emotion : gaiety
2: a state of happiness or felicity : bliss
3: a source or cause of delight

Well, okay. That's a fairly good definition.
However, I like to think of joy as this:

Joy: the sacrifice of praise

Why ever would you define joy as that, you ask? Well, let me explain...but bear with me as I go back to the beginning...

So a couple of weeks ago the toaster oven quit working.  Well, that is to say that the 'toast' button quit working.  It still works if you use the oven settings.
The ice maker in the freezer quit working also.  The freezer still works, it just doesn't make ice cubes anymore.
Then two nights ago the microwave broke.  As in it doesn't run the microwave part.  The light still works, the buttons all work, and the fan works.  (just let me tell you that the past couple meals have been very interesting, preparation wise, without the microwave =P)
not my image

Now some of my family members reacted to this by focusing on all the negative aspects. "The toaster oven's 'toast' button doesn't work, the freezer won't make ice, the microwave doesn't heat up food!"

Others responded by focusing on the positive. "We can still make toast by just using the oven settings.  Who needs ice in winter anyhow? Just go grab an icicle outside...or use the ice cube trays. We can still use the stove top. What did people do before microwaves were invented anyhow? Hey look! The fridge, dishwasher, oven, stove top, and freezer all work!"

You see, some of us were looking at the situation as a half-empty glass of water. While the rest were looking at the same situation but saw that the glass was half-full.

Joy--true joy--is when we stop. and praise God no matter what is going on in our lives.

In Philippians 4:4, Paul commands that we "Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again -- rejoice!"
Yet how often do I slip into complaining instead of being grateful and rejoicing in what I have been given.  I know that I can't rejoice in every situation, I need God's help.  But oh, He is faithful and will help me in any and every situation I come across in life if I ask Him.

That is something I've really been challenged with lately and I thought I'd share. (and not just with the kitchen appliances either =P that was just the first illustration that came to mind)

I've found that going through my writing in and reading back through my 'blessings journal' (basically a journal where I write down all the things I'm thankful for--I got the idea from [here]) really helps me keep the mindset that my glass of life is half-full. =)

Another thing that encourages me is reading The Choice by Max Lucado.  You can read my post on it [here] to read it. =)

This song by Chris Tomlin is one that comes immediately to my mind when I think of joy:

Joy, unspeakable joy
An overflowing well,
no tongue can tell
Joy, unspeakable joy
Rises in my soul,
never lets me go

you can skip to 1:42 or 2:52 for this section

This definition was so much on my mind that I even made a Polyvore set to go with it. =P hehe!

Those are my thoughts on joy. What are your thoughts, dear friends? I'd love to know!

2: having a beauty that appeals to the heart or mind as well as to the eye, as a person or a face.
3: delightful; highly pleasing: to have a lovely time.

Saturday's Scrawls 2

1.) I came across this quote and love it:
""Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it." --C.S. Lewis
Pretty profound, huh? (he just told the truth! =P)

2.) My photo made it in the top five for Allie's Happy Monday photography challenge! =D
(you can go [here] to see the other finalists and vote for your favorite)

3.) Polyvore is just way too much fun =D

4.) A favorite verse of mine this week:

5.) I've got a fun new spring design for my photography blog in store--but not for this blog. =( So we'll just have to deal with the winter theme for a while more. (after all it is still snowing outside anyhow...)

sneak peak at the spring-y colors!

6.) I'd better get back to finishing up school--I'm rather behind this week....yuck.

7.) Oh and a special welcome to all the newest followers! =D

Saturday's Scrawls

It is cold. It is gray. There is freezing rain outside. Customers are gone.  I'm tired. An hour left before I can go home.  History essay yet to be written.  Algebra II yet to be solved.  PE yet to be done.  German yet to be learned.  Bathroom yet to be cleaned.  --but you know what?

Scrawl 1.)

I still have Hope.

why you ask? because...

You are always with me, Jesus
You know everything about me
You know when I wake and sleep
You know everything I’m thinking
You know all my secret deeds
You know every word I say
Long before I say it
You know everywhere I go
And all my ways

You are always with me, Jesus
Where could I go?
Where could I hide?
You are always with me, Jesus
Where could I go?
You never leave my side

If I flew away to heaven
Jesus, there I would find You
If I sank into the ocean
Jesus, You would be there too
Even in the darkest night
To You it’s bright as day
You have laid Your hand on me
It’s wonderful

You are always with me, Jesus
Where could I go?
Where could I hide?
You are always with me, Jesus
Where could I go?
You never leave my side
You Are Always with Me by Mark Altrogge from the Awesome God album

Thank you for always being with me, Jesus!

Scrawl 2.) a quote I came across this past week:
"You can't live for God until you learn how to live because of God. And you can't go and make good choices for God until you understand the gospel that says the choices you make don't make you who are, what Christ has done for you makes you who you are." Mike Donehey

Scrawl 3.) I discovered two websites this past week:
 pandora
Listen to up to 40 hours of music for free each month! =D You get to create stations based on songs or artists that you like. There are ads that show up every once in a while, but I have not come across any negative ones. You can also skip songs that you dislike and 'like' songs that you like so that it will play them again.  =)

Does this have the possibility of becoming a time waster and a procrastinator's tool---yup!

Have a spectacular Saturday, friends!

It's okay to say...Merry CHRISTmas!!!

Christmas is only in 3 days!!! can you believe it?! sigh, I feel so unprepared.  I had all these great ideas and gifts planned--but I never had the time to complete them. But you know what? All that really doesn't matter.
*gasp!* Yep, you heard me right--all that doesn't matter.  Why?
Because Christmas is all about Jesus.  Gifts, traditions, snow, cookies(yes even those yummylicious coconut balls dipped and drizzled in dark chocolate...), trees, and lights can't even start to compare to Him.  (He created them all!! wow.)
So this Christmas let's focus on the real reason--Christ.  The sacrifices that He made for us--being born a man, and ultimately His death and resurrection!
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
One of my pet peves is when people take the Christ out of Christmas! (x-mas, happy holidays, season's greetings--they try so hard not to say His name) My automatic response to that is to say, "Merry Christmas to you too!" and give a big smile! =D
Because you know
it's okay to say..Merry CHRISTmas!

Pass it on!
It's okay to say…Merry CHRISTmas!!!

It's okay to say…Merry CHRISTmas!!!

It's okay to say…Merry CHRISTmas!!!

It's okay to say…Merry CHRISTmas!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Love in Christ,
