Beautiful moments, quick but precious. The moments that give so much meaning to life, that are yet so small. Seeing the orange-red sun melt away, drawing behind it a dark, silvery curtain; listening to the rain pattering on the roof. Watching a squirrel nibble on some corn, or listening to a bird’s song.
The joyful trilling of a bird, light and happy, that you hear after learning of a great hardship that has come to you, makes you stop. And wonder.
The one raindrop, clinging to a vivid flower, sparkling like a diamond before you as tears run down your face – because he isn’t coming home – makes you stop. And wonder.
That ray of golden sunshine that cuts through a dreary city, turning a foreboding, abandoned storefront into a thing of beauty, makes us stop. And wonder. And wonder again at how something so old, so broken, so rejected, could become beautiful again.
The moments, beautiful and precious, are a promise, in joy and sorrow, in everyday life and other times. They are a promise that all things will be made new, that there is One who mends the broken, heals the sick, and gives strength to the fatherless. One who will wipe away every tear from our eyes. One who will make all things new. Just as a ray of sunshine turns what is old and castoff into something beautiful, He turns us, broken, tired people, into something glorious for Him.
And when all hope has gone, and there is no strength left to fight for life, He will carry us, and turn what is so old, so broken, so rejected, into something beautiful again.
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. (Revelation 21:2-6)
